Fall 2023
Vanderbilt University
In the Fall of 2023, students enrolled in Vanderbilt’s Sociology of Asian America class completed semester-long projects that explored Asian American media along five “genres”: Asian American brands, Asian American competition, Asian American moving images, Asian American sound, Asian American words. Students collectively brainstormed these genres in the first week of classes and then chose individual topics based on their preferred genre. They also joined small groups where they shared feedback and collaborated on group exhibit page. Over a series of scaffolded assignments, they learned how to craft a visual essay that blended sociological analysis with examples from Asian American media.
Synthesizing these elements, their visual essays and exhibits explore how current Asian American media connects to the broader context of Asian American society, culture, and politics.
