Overview
From fashion and clothing to cosmetics and skincare, Asian-American Brands is a wide-ranging category that spans across multiple industries. In order to better explain Asian-American brands and their relationship to sociological concepts, our group chose three companies: Tower 28 (Aslyn Saengsavangsak), Glow Recipe (Joshua Mi), and State Cashmere (Aleksi Ojanen). Through an overall analysis of business practices, all group members were able to establish certain concepts to focus on in their research. All group members researched the use of Asian cultural heritage as a strategic marketing tool that allows their respective brands to engage with a targeted audience. All groups also drew upon identities of their respective products and how they work to attract various members of the public market.
Other sociological concepts addressed in the visual essays are the historical precedents of Asian-American Labor in the US (Joshua), the lasting effects of settler colonialism in the US markets (Aslyn), and the impacts of unethical consumerism and materialism on Asian communities domestically and internationally (Aleksi).
The Asian-American Brand group used numerous media objects to offer a better understanding and familiarity of their brand and individual sociological concepts. From informational videos and Instagram photos to observe sociological components, to photos of brand products and logos, the Asian-American Brand Group has placed a focus on providing valuable information to engage and educate the viewer.
We hope you enjoy our project on Asian-American brands and learn more about their particular relation to class sociological concepts!

-
The identification with a particular group based on various cultural categories, including nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, and religion (Chen, 2014)[1]. Asian Americans share a cultural identity through their intersecting experiences.
-
Encompasses a rapidly growing racial demographic that includes a vast array of ethnic groups with diverse histories of immigration and refugee resettlement in the U.S. (Banghal & Poon, 2020). [2]
-
Practical work, especially when it involves hard physical effort. Historically, Asian Americans have immigrated to the United States partially in search of economic opportunity, but the few prospects available were arduous labor like agriculture, fishing, and railroads. Additionally, since the beginning, Asian American immigrants have faced exploitation, as cultural, language, and legal challenges have created barriers to accessing justice and fair practice (Cambridge Dictionary; Friday, 1994). [3]
-
“The process of trying to convince a person that your product is worth investing in, establish brand loyalty and increase overall sales” (Snyder, 2023)[4]. Asian American companies are able to market themselves by sharing their values and beliefs about their products that may appeal to an Asian American audience.

State Cashmere (1)
Aleksi Ojanen
State Cashmere is a Mongolian-American cashmere clothing company based out of New York, New York. Founded in 2017 by Hao Rong, a Mongolian-American immigrant from a line of Mongolian shepherds, State Cashmere promises to provide their customers with the best quality cashmere sweaters, hats, and other products. However, this promise has been harder to uphold in recent years due to changing Mongolian lifestyles, shorter harvesting periods, and overgrazing of Mongolia’s steppe.

Tower 28 (5)
Aslyn Saengsavangsak
Tower 28 was founded by Amy Liu, an Asian American woman who has spent the last two decades working for makeup and skincare brands. Although she worked for these companies, she felt excluded in the fact that she could never use the products herself; Her chronic eczema made it hard to find any safe makeup products, and if there were some, they were usually from the clinic, or given very medicinal packaging. Since launching, they’ve had multiple products approved by the National Eczema Association and have made efforts toward creating cleaner packaging. The company prides itself on its inclusivity towards all skin colors, as well as types, with their saying, “It’s okay to be sensitive”.

Glow Recipe (3)
Joshua Mi
Glow Recipe is a Korean-inspired skincare brand based out of New York, targeting a diverse audience with nature-conscious and science-believing values. The brand utilizes Asian and Korean cultural cues and beauty values to create a unique brand identity and differentiate itself. In fact, Glow Recipe became viral for its Watermelon Mask, which represents the brand’s reliance on the ideals of natural elements, leaning into its science and technology forward public perception by highlighting the Alpha-hydroxy-acid complexes utilized, as well as clinical trial results.
